Do You Believe in Miracles Redux Not To Be

Congratulations to Team Canada. As painful as that is for me to say, today's Gold medal game was truly a win/win for hockey fans. Despite a late third period goal by Zach Parise to tie the game at 2, Sid the Kid struck in OT to capture gold.

This was a very impressive tournament and if you watched the games and still don't like hockey, something is simply wrong with you. Now it's back to the grind of the NHL season and the push for the playoffs. My Chicago Blackhawks fielded (6) Olympians (Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Tomas Kopesky, Brent Seabrook, Duncan Keith and Marian Hossa) and most importantly, all return from Vancouver with no injuries.

Sidney Crosby's card value already are at a peak level and I anticipate a minor bump spike in value as casual fans may attempt to track down a copy of his more affordable RC's, most notably 2005-06 Upper Deck and Black Diamond.

For Team USA, goaltender Ryan Miller (Buffalo Sabres) and Zach Parise (New Jersey Devils) should also see increased interest on the secondary market with Parise also having a Young Gun RC in UD 2005/06. Ryan Miller on the other hand, has rookie cards from 2002/03, before the Upper Deck exclusive license went in effect.

Famous Fabrics- A Love/Hate Relationship

I really can't decide if I love it or hate it. Creative Cardboard Concepts a Dr. Brian Price company (In The Game), has recently released a high-end (1) card per pack product which is focused on authentic game used memorabilia of the super swatch and multi-colored patch variety. (Not surprisingly based on its name.)

The glaring deficiency to these cards, in my opinion, is the lack of athlete photo to accompany the memorabilia. But, at the same time, do I care if I could own a triple color Lebron James patch or super sized swatch of Derek Jeter. I just don't know.

At a current SRP of around $110, that's a lot of coin for one card, but some of the material and cut autos are amazing. Take for instance the dual piece of fight worn shorts from Ali-Frazier. No other product on the planet, to date, can deliver that kind of card.

The Famous product transcends all sports; baseball, football, basketball, hockey, track and field, boxing, golf, tennis, horse racing, soccer, swimming and many more. In addition it is extremely limited. Only 400 10-pack boxes were made. For the math deficient that is 4,000 total cards to the ENTIRE PRODUCT. Each card is encased in a graded card like slab and only 10 or fewer copies of each card exist. (9 silver and 1 gold.)

For a player collector, I can definitely see chasing some of these cards on the secondary market, but I can't see buying these as a card per pack product. But, then again if money was no object, I'd been in for at least three.

So like I said at the start. I have a love/hate relationship with Dr. Brian Price's latest offering.

Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects and Their Key Rookie Cards

Baseball America's annual ranking of the Top 100 MLB Prospects was released today. Most collectors will instantly identify many of them but to the non-prospect savvy here is a list of the Top 10 (Part 1) and a look at some of their key RC's and XRC's (Subject to the fact that technically speaking, that most of these players have not qualified for official MLB rookie card designation, but that's an argument for another post.)

02 Stephen Strasburg, rhp, Nationals

Quick Hits and Random Thoughts

Forbes interviews Panini CEO. Sort of. Columnist Tom Van Riper calls it like he sees it providing an argumentative counterpoint. Read the article here.

eTopps is having what they are calling a "Discounted Shipping Offer". Really? Your discounted shipping is still more expensive than USPS Pricing for Priority Mail. Is that hand deliverd in a velvet satchel by the ghost of Arthur Shorin himself? It's bad enought I fell for that whole scam when it first came out. Thus dooming my cards to existence in cardboard purgatory due to the fact that SHIPPING COSTS MORE THAN THEY ARE WORTH!!!

Upper Deck is King of Social Media in the sports collectibles and trading card markets. See for yourself and connect.

EA Sports and Upper Deck- Sports trading card games geared to kids are a joke. Have the marketers and CEO's who dream this crap up not heard of XBOX, Playstation or Wii. At least UD has seemingly embrassed that end by instead of recreating the wheel to bring kids to them. They are going where kids are. Check out the advertising on the boards of a hockey game in the EA sports franchise NHL. Bright shimy Upper Deck logos in your face like any other advertising.

eBay and PayPal- When a prospective seller asks me if I take Money Order. I emphatically respond, "YES!!" It still seems criminal that eBay eliminated that form of payment via automated checkout so that they get their cut from your PayPal payment. Thank God for savvy sellers to at least ask. If you try putting "Check and/or M.O accepted." in your description, you get blocked with an error message. At least it was when the transistion happened. This comes to my attention because a seller inquiry about the '70 Thurman Munson RC I currently have up for sale as part of (2) different vintage consignments.

Speaking of vintage consignments, I know it is a bit of a pipe dream, but with (2) collections in hand and inquiry from a third, wouldn't it be nice if you could make a legitimate, mortgage paying business out of it? For those interested, here is a link to My eBay listings.

Product Review and Box Break- 2010 Topps Series 1 Returns to Its Roots

Topps. The word itself is synonymous with baseball cards and as much a part of the sport as Spring Training and the World Series. Despite recent attempts by its competitor to let collectors think otherwise, Topps is the exclusive trading card manufacturer of Major League Baseball for 2010. Returning to their glory days for the first time in almost 30-years as the name in baseball trading cards.

To coronate this fact, Topps is providing collectors an opportunity to recapture lost moments of history, time and cardboard treasure with one of the biggest promotions The Hobby has ever seen. Randomly inserted at a rate of approximately 1:6 packs, casual fans and collectors will find Topps Million Card Giveaway code cards. These codes can be redeemed online to reveal an original Topps card from year’s gone by. This includes, what has been reported by Topps PR spokesperson, Clay Luraschi, as including (3) 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie cards, the granddaddy of the all.

Product Review- Certified Basketball

After a fine showing at the NBA All-Star game where they proudly displayed the largest game-used trading card and introduced their new NBA trading card game – Adrenalyn, Panini is back with another loaded release 09-10 Certified. The 10-pack box contains four big hits and lots and lots of glossy, shiny cardboard. Priced at about $85 per box Certified is a parallel collectors dream set. Its rainbow-colored variants have always been a favorite of collectors and so have the multi-level Fabric of the Game inserts. There are enough variations to make the most level-headed collector crazy – in a good way! The set also contains exclusive Kobe Bryant memorabilia and hard-signed Kobe autographs!

Off Topic- When Movies and Comic Books Collide (w/ must see trailer)

The silver screen has seen a run on comic book characters in recent years, including the screen adaptation of Watchman, the only graphic novel ever listed on Time Magazines "Most Important Books of All Time" list. Sometimes they work (Spiderman trilogy), sometimes they don't (Punisher War Zone), sometimes they're epic (Dark Knight) and sometimes . . they're just . . .KICK ASS!!

Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey Has Variety

This set has plenty of variety, including the Victory rookie cards, “UD Exclusives”, “Draft Day Gems”, “Playoff Performers”, “Young Guns” and “The Champions”. My two “Champions” cards were of Sasha Cohen (figure skater) and Cassie Campbell (Team Canada hockey star). Campbell’s card makes a lot of sense and Cohen’s, well not really, although I am partial to her name.

Spring Training 101- A TTM Autograph Collector's Dream

It's hard to believe it's that time already but pitchers and catchers reported to their respective spring training camps today! While the rest of the roster won't report for another couple of weeks, NOW is the time to start mailing your TTM autograph requests.

First, some resources:

1) List of addresses. C/O the athlete at the stadium.

2) What to get signed? That's really up to you. Base cards from non-glossy sets like Allen & Ginter, Heritage or Goodwin Champions work great. Another alternative is a signature card. The Autograph Card provides very nice and affordable options.

Second, some suggestions:

1) Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, and Alex Rodriguez are not going to sign for your TTM request. Get over it.

2) Include a short, legible, hand written note. Personalize it by wishing the player luck, thanking them for their effort last year and be polite, please and thank you, still go a long way in this world. Also, these athletes aren't your friends. Use the appropriate salutation, i.e Mr. _______

3) DON'T ask to NOT personalize it. It wreaks of, "I am going to sell this on eBay." Let the athlete decide. Better yet, by asking for it personalized, you actually increase your chances of success.
4) Include a SASE. Goes without saying.

5) The soft Ultra-Pro top-loaders, not the standard rigid ones are recommended. They make it easier for the athlete to remove and replace the card than a penny sleeve and top-loader.

Lastly, if you are attending your team's camp in person (IP):

1) Don't be THAT GUY. You know what guy I am talking about. The pushy guy that asks for multiple autographs from the same athlete, EVERY DAY.

2) Kids first. Period. Yes, an 18- year old is still a kid.

3) Don't ask for multiples and don't ask more than once. Period.

4) If you are getting autos in person, official MLB baseballs are great. You can throw a couple dozen in daypack easily. Shop around, but this is a good price on a dozen.

5) Pen choice. You can't go wrong with a Staedtler.

6) Politeness is even more important in person. Please, thank you and Mr._______

So that's it. Spring Training autograph hunting 101. Good luck and let's hear some of your successes.

Countdown to March Madness

Despite being in the middle of the Olympics, one of the most exciting times of the year for an NCAA fan will be here before you know it. While many people view college basketball as nothing more than a "feeder" league for the NBA, there is no denying that every March great stories are made on the hardwood. To get a jump start on the spirit of the Tournament, a quiz, the Sweet Sixteen Quiz.
Take the quiz, courtesy of Mental Floss and let us know how you did. It's tough, I went 9/16.

Off Topic- Snow Bunnies

Today will decide the winner of the woman's downhill competition at the Vancouver Olympics. The favorite, Lindsey Vonn, is recovering from a shin injury and teammate Julia Mancuso is primed for an upset. But more importantly, whose hotter?

Topps Pulls Off a PR Coup

Well, it seems that every blogger, Tweeter, and message board poster has an opinion on the Topps Million Card Giveaway, so I thought I'd share my 2c as well. Albeit and as to be expected, from a different perspective.

Despite,
the site crashing several times as a result of the much anticipated launch and the collector rush to see if they are the lucky one to redeem a '52 Mantle RC, all in all, I'd have to say this has been a very successful promotion by Topps.

Many people were frustrated that Topps Series 1 released over a month prior to the site and promotion being live. However, I honestly believe this was a classic PR stunt to build anticipation and generate hype and not a failure of planning by the marketing and IT departments.

Not content to let traditional Hobby media sources carry the exclusive, Topps has partnered with the iconic, Cal Ripken Jr for a whirlwind media blitz starting tomorrow. According to their
Twitter feed, "Check Cal Ripken Jr and Topps on 2/16 (who will be on) Fox and Friends, CNBC Power Lunch, MLB Network, Fox Business, Mad Dog Radio, SNY, ESPN radio and more." What better person than the face that, some say, helped save baseball after the disastrous strike of 1994 that saw the cancellation of a season including the World Series?

I really have to give Topps credit for the promotional push as The Hobby can always use some positive press. Tying the event to the poor mothers who have been blamed for the destruction of countless childhood card collections, is sure to garner sympathy coverage from many, many mainstream media outlets other than those scheduled. (For the record- my mother did not throw away my collection, I sold it for $250 to travel with the Grateful Dead one summer.)

Unfortunately, we live in a society where negative attention makes the best news story and all to often The Hobby is portrayed in the media as a greedy, self-serving industry, full of counterfeits, corruption, and forgeries. While these issues clearly exist, they certainly, in and of themselves do not define the hobby we love.
In an industry whose essence is the production of cardboard with pictures on them, its really hard to generate a buzz outside of traditional collectors and The Hobby media. Topps may have very well succeeded in overcoming that hurdle with the Million Card Giveaway. It will be very interesting to see what tomorrow brings and the questions to be asked of Cal Ripken Jr by the mainstream media's talking heads.
